Who and Why PHP

PHP is an open source general purpose scripting language that can be used to develop dynamic and interactive websites. It was originally created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1994 as a way to maintain his personal homepage, extending to then work with web forms and databases.

PHP Environment

PHP is designed to be a server side scripting language allowing the return of HTML information to the end user along with form and database interaction. PHP works with Apache to help create dynamic web content.

Usage of PHP on the Internet

PHP is used on sites like Facebook, Wikipedia, Tumblr, Slack, MailChimp, Etsy and WordPress. It is ranked as the 11th most popular language on tiobe.com.
